At the March 27-28th Design Rodeo workshop, attendees saw the planning process at work and weighed in on this topic as it continues to come together. The information and questions below seek to continue this community dialogue. Add your thoughts, by Friday, May 31st.

Potential for the Public Works Yard

In the assessment of Paris Street's potential, city staff revealed that the Public Works department will need more room soon, and there could be the potential for the Public Works Yard to be redesigned.

The city’s budget is bolstered by properties that pay property tax. Depending on what buildings are on the property, the property tax paid can contribute more or less to the city’s budget. With more overall property tax income from infill development, the property tax burden goes down for everyone (lower taxes!) and the city has the funds it needs to provide services, like fixing potholes!

Knowing that the City of Castroville receives no property tax income from surrounding growth outside of the city limits, infill development becomes Castroville’s only opportunity to lower taxes.

With this in mind, which of the four versions of the Public Works Yard would you prefer and why? Leave answers & comments below.

Note: Paris Street is at the bottom (with The Moye Retreat Center across from it), Naples Street and Amelia Street are on either side, with Madrid Street at the top of the plans.)

Leave your thoughts and comments below. Open for comment through May 31st.

Note: This design recommends preserving the historic building in the top right corner. Although the building has fallen into significant disrepair, it could be brought back to good use.

Option 2

Note: This design recommends a plaza in the bottom right corner, the side of the property nearest to the current downtown core of Castroville. This could serve to attract downtown visitors to these small retail businesses (without needing a lot more parking since it's tied into the Houston Square area and parking provided there.)
