Why is the Bike Plan needed?

Of all trips made in Dallas, 40% are within 3 miles.

If only a few of those trips under 3miles could be converted from cars to trips by bike, we make stronger neighborhoods and reach our goals together.

As DFW experiences exponential growth, accommodating growth within Dallas could mean a focus on complete neighborhoods and easy access to neighborhood services.

Since the 2011 Bike Plan, the city has changed. Destinations have changed and new businesses have opened. Equity across Dallas in the development of bike infrastructure is desperately needed. This Bike Plan Update refreshes the planned bike network with a focus on connecting neighborhood throughout Dallas.

How safe is biking in Dallas?

The Dallas Vision Zero action plan is focused on improving safety for all users, especially along the corridors with the highest number of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes. This "High Injury Network" (HIN) is targeted for many types of improvements.

The Bike Plan Update has identified and prioritized safety improvements on streets and at intersections where the HIN aligns with high-demand biking routes.

How soon will the plan be implemented?

Since 2011, Dallas has implemented __mi bike lanes and ___ off-street shared-use sidewalks and trails. With ____ more projects funded and in the pipeline.

The speed of implementation depends on a few factors:

city budget and other funding sources
complementary projects that can integrate bike facilities
opportunities and prioritization

The Bike Plan Update identifies 15 projects that were designed during the update process, to facilitate various ways of accelerating implementation - some are now poised for grant applications, some required more analysis so that it could be correctly identified as a desired project in the plan update.
